New Delhi: Union Interior Minister Amit Shah will thank Olympic silver medalist Mirabai Chanu on Saturday for bringing laurels to the country in weightlifting.

The 27-year-old athlete, who was appointed additional superintendent of the police in her home state of Manipur after her recent victory, will become the 51st tank during the celebrations.

“This is a small gesture by the BPR & D to welcome you (Saikhom Mirabai Chanu) to the Brotherhood on behalf of the Indian Police,” said an official statement.

Chanu had won a silver medal in weightlifting in the 49kg category, which opened India’s performance account at the recently concluded Tokyo Olympics.

During the event, the Interior Minister will also award trophies and medals for excellent training to state and central police organizations and forces, and will also honor seven authors who have written on police topics in Hindi, the statement said.

The BPRD, an organization subordinate to the Ministry of the Interior, was founded in August 1970.
