BAKU, Azerbaijan (dpa) – Denmark’s trip to the EM goes to London.

The Danes, who had developed into a surprise candidate after the start of their tournament with a cardiac arrest of midfielder Christian Eriksen, reached the semi-finals of Euro 2020 on Saturday with a 2-1 win against the Czech Republic.

After the usual tributes to the recovered Eriksen from UEFA and the fans – a giant jersey with the number 10 on the field and a “For Christ10an” banner in the stands – Denmark quickly took control on a hot and humid night in Azerbaijan against the Czechs.

Jens Stryger sent a swinging corner in the fifth minute to Thomas Delaney, who was standing at the penalty spot in the room. Delaney’s header went past goalkeeper Tomáš Vaclík’s outstretched hand.

Denmark doubled their lead just before half-time. Joakim Maehle hit a flank from the left with the outside of his right foot. The ball escaped Martin Braithwaite’s attempt at a header, but Kasper Dolberg missed his marker and defeated Vaclík in 42nd place.

The place in the semi-finals is the largest that Denmark has achieved in a major tournament since winning the European title in 1992. The team will face either England or Ukraine at Wembley Stadium on Wednesday.

“We are making history that we have now reached the semi-finals,” said Stryger. “It has been many, many years since Denmark was there. … We know Denmark is going crazy right now. “

Czech striker Patrik Schick scored his fifth goal at the beginning of the second half and was tied with Cristiano Ronaldo as the tournament’s top scorer. Defender Jannik Vestergaard gave Schick plenty of room to hit a first-touch shot from Vladimir Coufal’s wavy pass.

The Czechs tried hard to level the score in a physical match that ended with Tomas Soucek and Jan Boril, both of whom were bandaged on their heads after collisions with Danish players.

Denmark lost their first two games at Euro 2020, first to Finland – when Eriksen collapsed on the field – and then to Belgium. The Danes were on the verge of elimination before beating Russia, Wales and the Czechs in turn.

Eriksen, who had to be resuscitated with a defibrillator in the opening game, is recovering at home.

The last of four Euro 2020 games to be played on the shores of the Caspian Sea in Baku took place in front of 16,300 fans, although coronavirus pandemic regulations would have allowed up to 31,000. Danish fans were far superior to the few dozen from the Czech Republic.

The Danish players gathered in front of their traveling fans after the final whistle to celebrate. Delaney wore a Danish flag as a cloak and put a red and white wig on the head of the grinning substitute Andreas Cornelius.

The Czech players were stretched out on the grass.

“It’s a big disappointment. We did everything we could to be successful, but towards the end we ran out of breath and we couldn’t change things. Unfortunately, it’s over for us, “Schick told Czech public television.” As for the goals, everything was good for me. But we all feel that we could have done more today. The Danes could have been beaten. “
