While La Liga players meet up with their national teams to play World Cup qualifiers, here are five with particularly interesting storylines.

Sergiño Dest (FC Barcelona and USA)

The USA is known to have missed a place at the 2018 World Cup. So getting to Qatar in 2022 is a priority for her and the country’s fans hope that young talents like Sergiño Dest can lead them there. The right-back of FC Barcelona is in Gregg Berhalter’s squad for the qualifiers against El Salvador, Canada and Honduras in September and wants to impress for his national team. Meeting with his country too, Dest knows that strong performances will help him in his club fight as he signs Emerson for minutes to the right of Barça’s defense this summer.

Karim Benzema (Real Madrid and France)

After a six-year absence from the national team, Karim Benzema returned to the French national team for Euro 2020 and Real Madrid number 9 scored four goals in four games. Now fans can see the striker in blue again this September as he looks to fire France for the 2022 World Cup. During this break they play qualifiers against Bosnia and Herzegovina, Ukraine and Finland.

Take Kubo (Real Mallorca and Japan)

Take Kubo was exceptional at the Olympics, leading Japan to three wins out of three in the group stage, scoring in every game before reaching the semifinals. Ultimately, the hosts lost the bronze medal game despite Kubo providing an assist in that loss to Mexico. Now the 20-year-old, who is on loan from Real Madrid to Real Mallorca this season, will try to make a similar impact in Japan’s senior squad in World Cup qualifiers against Oman and China.

Brais Méndez (Celta Vigo and Spain)

Brais Méndez has played one game and scored a goal for Spain. In 2018 he scored the only goal in a 1-0 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina. The Celta Vigo playmaker has not played for his country since, but is back on the roster for La Roja’s September qualifiers against Sweden, Georgia and Kosovo. Luis Enrique said he was impressed with the 24-year-old’s performance and deserved to fight for the national team minutes again.

Alexander Sørloth (Real Sociedad and Norway)

Alexander Sørloth’s move from RB Leipzig to Real Sociedad stands out as one of the most fascinating of the summer. Great things are expected of the striker and fans of La Real and Spanish football in general can see exactly what Sørloth can do in Norway’s games against the Netherlands, Latvia and Gibraltar after seeing him at his in just over five minutes Debut against Levante. The striker has scored 11 goals in 32 international matches and plans to score more in September.
