SANTA CRUZ DE BEZANA (Spain): Fabio Jakobsen’s remarkable comeback after a fatal blow continued on Tuesday when the Dutchman won a third stage of La Vuelta a Espana on his 25th birthday.
The Deceuninck Quick-Step sprinter had to undergo five-hour emergency surgery after a high-speed crash on the Tour of Poland a year ago, but he appears to be fully recovered on his comeback at the Grand Tour and has the green points jersey after this final Sprinter firmly under control Sprint stage of the 21-day race.
The Norwegian Odd Cristian Eiking kept his surprising overall lead after the 16th stage and finished his run in red for one week.
Jakobsen celebrated his most recent victory in front of the Deceuninck CEO who was present, to whom the Briton Mark Cavendish also attributed his comeback at the Tour de France in July.
The Dutch sprinter has 250 points in the green jersey ranking, Matteo Trentin is second with 123.
His Vuelta is already a resounding success as he feared for his life in Poland when he flew over barriers into a metal post and lost all his teeth in the process.
