Fernando Alonso is in hospital after being involved in a traffic accident while cycling in Switzerland.

The two-time world champion is “conscious and good in himself” and is now waiting for further medical examinations on Friday morning, his F1 team said in a statement.

The team says more updates will be released on Friday.

Alonso is returning to Formula 1 this year after spending two seasons in other categories. The 39-year-old returned with the team he won his two world titles with in 2005 and 2006 when he was known as Renault.
