The Bavarian giants wanted to keep Kimmich, who has developed into one of the best midfielders in Europe since moving from Bundesliga rivals RB Leipzig in 2015.

In total, Kimmich has played 264 international matches with Bayern, scored 30 goals and won six German titles, three German cups and the Champions League with the club.

“The most important reason for my contract extension is that I can enjoy my passion every day at FC Bayern,” said Kimmich in a club announcement.

In the summer, Bayern lost Austrian defender David Alaba to Real Madrid on a free transfer after the end of their contract. The club wanted to avoid a similar situation developing with Kimmich.

Kimmich played a full 90 minutes on Sunday when FC Bayern Munich fought their way to a 3-2 win over FC Köln, their first home win in the new Bundesliga season.
