Go fishing and explore the wildlife with the new Take It Outdoors programs | lifestyle

Take It Outdoors Adventures, a leisure outfitter and service company based in Pottstown, offers summer programs to help the community experience the Schuylkill River beyond paddling.

In addition to the company’s usual services like guided boat trips and free bike rentals, Take It Outdoors has added two new programs this season to help people enjoy the river in different ways.

A kayak fishing program combines two recreational activities into one. Anglers can cast lines from a rented kayak through the outfitter. A watershed discovery program enables families to learn about the local environment from the water. Below are more details about each of these programs.

Kayak fishing

Take It Outdoors offers an Early Bird Kayak Fishing program on selected Saturdays throughout the summer. Anglers who participate receive a 50% discount on boat rentals and shuttle services. For anglers, canoes and fishing kayaks are available for the river.

Take It Outdoors Director Noah Phillips said sit-on-top kayaks are often used for fishing. The boats are designed so that paddlers sit on top with their legs exposed while sitting in an enclosed area.

“That makes for more mobility. Your gear is easier to get to and much easier to fish, ”said Phillips.

To participate in the program, anglers only need to bring proof of their fishing license and the necessary fishing equipment such as rods and bait. Then at Take It Outdoors they can rent a single kayak for $ 25 or a canoe for $ 45.

Boat rentals also include a paddle, life jacket, and shuttle service. Participants will park their vehicles at Take It Outdoors in Pottstown, then they and all their equipment will be taken to the launch area of Union Meadows Park in Douglassville. Anglers paddle down the river back to Pottstown, hopefully while catching some fish. This program is available on July 24th, July 25th, August 7th and August 8th at 8:00 am.

Take It Outdoors has ordered additional sit-on-tap kayaks that can be used for additional fishing programs this fall. The aim is to offer kayak fishing courses. One course is aimed at experienced anglers who want to try fishing from a kayak. There will also be courses for people with limited fishing experience and all equipment can be borrowed.

“This will be more focused on children and families,” said Phillips.

Discovery of the watershed

Take It Outdoors works with the Schuylkill River Greenways National Heritage Area to help people explore the river’s flora and fauna while paddling.

Watershed Discovery is a self-guided paddling experience along the river where families use exploration tools to learn more about the wildlife. Participants use binoculars and a wildlife ID key to learn about the area’s plants and animals as they paddle.

“In today’s world, we’ve seen the river many times from streets and highways. The Watershed Program enables families and individuals to experience the river from the water to see wildlife in nature and from a new perspective, ”said Sarah Crothers, Schuylkill River Greenways Education Director.

Children under the age of 13 who submit a completed bingo card about what they saw during the nature trip will receive a Schuylkill Explorers Aquatic Kit to take away. Kit includes a clipboard with activities like a watershed scavenger hunt, cloud watcher, watershed map, and magnifying glass for exploring the Schuylkill River Watershed at home. Kits are available depending on the quantity.

The Watershed Discovery program runs through Labor Day this summer.
