Israel Folau did not return to France from Australia

Israel Folau was released by Catalans Dragons after failing to return from Australia due to “a personal family situation”.

Double-code international Folau was fired from Rugby Australia in 2019 for a social media post deemed discriminatory by the rugby union federation and joined the Dragons in early 2020 but did not return from Australia to train in France earlier this year.

The 32-year-old former kangaroo and State of Origin center, who was signed to the Dragons for 2021, has filed an application with the Queensland Rugby League to play with his two brothers in the local Gold Coast competition.

Dragons Chairman Bernard Guasch said: “Israel played great with us both on and off the field in 2020 and we wanted to ease the negotiations to reach an agreement.

“He told us he wanted to play with his two brothers and we didn’t want to stop him. We wish him all the best for the next chapter of his career.”
