Detroit Lions cornerback Jeff Okudah has an Achilles tendon injury at the end of the season, the team said on Monday.
“He will be out for the rest of the year,” said Lions coach Dan Campbell. “I hate it for him and I hate it for us as a team because he really got around.”
Okudah was injured in the fourth quarter on Sunday when the San Francisco 49ers beat the Lions 41:33.
“As a player who’s been injured a lot, I know what it’s like to be back in the training room,” said Campbell. “You have to be careful that it pulls you down. His whole focus after the operation must be on preparing for 2022. “
Detroit drafted the Ohio State Star No. 3 overall last year and injuries limited him to nine games as a rookie. Okudah seemed to be improving during training camp, but he had a tough game in week 1.
Lions secondary coach Aubrey Pleasant was seen on the sidelines yelling at Okudah, 22, who was both speaking and listening. Later in the game, Okudah fell for cover on a 79-yard touchdown reception.
