Nicolai Hojgaard leads the Italian Open after his twin brother’s victory | Sports news

GUIDONIA MONTECELIO, Italy (dpa) – Nicolai Hojgaard shot a 65 to go into the finals of the Italian Open on Saturday – a week after the identical twin brother Rasmus won the European Tour in Switzerland.

“Seeing Rasmus win is a great motivation. I’m just trying to follow in his footsteps a little, ”said Nicolai. “I hope I can do it tomorrow.”

Of the two 20-year-old Danes, Rasmus has so far been the more successful with three European Tour victories, including his European Masters title in Crans-Montana last weekend.

But Nicolai, who started the day three strokes behind and was still chasing his first Tour triumph, had a clean lap with four birdies and an eagle after taking the par-4 16 green.

Nicolai tries to make the Hojgaards the first brothers to win consecutive events on the European Tour.

“I’m just trying to have a constant level of emotion. I try not to be too excited when I hit a shot or vice versa, ”said Nicolai. “I just try to be calm all the time and sometimes it’s good, sometimes it’s not, but I had a really good day on the course.”

Nicolai’s best career result was a second place behind Sergio Garcia at the KLM Open 2019.
