DENVER (AP) – Philadelphia’s JT Realmuto will replace the injured catcher Buster Posey from San Francisco as the starter of the National League in the All-Star Game on Tuesday in Coors Field.

St. Louis catcher Yadier Molina received his 10th all-star pick from 10 substitutes announced by Major League Baseball on Saturday.

Molina was elected on the players’ ballot, occupying the seat vacated when Posey was put on the injured list on Friday, five days after his left thumb was injured by a foul tip.

Kansas City’s second baseman Whit Merrifield and Chicago White Sox shortstop Tim Anderson also received a selection from the players’ ballot, replacing Houston second baseman José Altuve and shortstop Carlos Correa.

Altuve said he needed time off to deal with unspecified issues with his left leg, and Correa said he wanted to spend time with Ms. Daniella, who is pregnant with the couple’s first child.

Merrifield became a two-time All-Star. Anderson, the 2019 AL batting champion, earned his first all-star trip.

New York Mets pitcher Jacob deGrom also said he was pulling out of the all-star game and wanted to rest for the second half. DeGrom, who has an ERA of 1.08, was plagued by discomfort in the right lat muscle, tightness in his right side, and flexor tendonitis in his right arm for the first half.

The commissioner’s office selected Washington’s Max Scherzer, Walker Buehler of the Los Angeles Dodgers, Taijuan Walker of the Mets, and Freddy Peralta of Milwaukee as additions to the NL pitching staff. Mets manager Luis Rojas and Brewers manager Craig Counsell had said Friday that their pitchers would be added.

Scherzer received his eighth all-star selection.

MLB also added Dodger’s third baseman Justin Turner to the NL roster and Oakland pitcher Chris Bassitt and Tampa Bay second baseman Joey Wendle to the AL roster.

Houston outfielder Michael Brantley and San Diego pitcher Yu Darvish are retiring due to injuries.

Cleveland pitcher Shane Bieber, Los Angeles Angels outfielder Mike Trout and Washington outfielder Kyle Schwarber were previously disqualified due to injuries.

Kevin Gausman of San Francisco and Brandon Woodruff of Mikwaukee will remain active for the game but are due to start for their teams on Sunday.

Houston-based Ryan Pressly will miss the game on paternity leave.

Anderson, Bassitt, Peralta, Walker and Wendle raise the total to 39 first-time All-Stars, which is the 2013 high.
