Spectators caused mass fall at Tour de France | More sports news

LANDERNEAU (France): A massive crash that involved about half of the Tour de France peloton gave a strong warning to roadside fans trying to get themselves on TV on Saturday.
About 45 km before the finish line of the 1st stage of the tour between Brest and Landerneau, a fan with a sign brought down the German driver Tony Martin, who was close to the front of the field and close to enthusiastic street fans.
The jumbo rider fell and brought down a large number of riders behind him. The crash held up the race for five minutes while the bikes and bodies were disentangled.
The leader braked to allow the stragglers to catch up and, despite the spectacular confusion, only one driver had to sit out because of the accident.
