Atlanta, February 13th (AP) Atlanta United have strengthened one place of the week by signing defensive midfielder Santiago Sosa on a transfer from Argentina’s River Plate club.

Sosa, 21, represented Argentina at the 2019 FIFA U-20 World Cup and could compete for his home country at the Tokyo Olympics.

Atlanta United announced the deal on Friday.

Sosa has spent his entire professional career at River Plate, receiving a senior roster promotion in the 2018-19 season. He played 14 games in 2020, including six in the Copa Libertadores and six more in the Copa Diego Maradona.

The Sosa acquisition is an important part of United’s efforts to bounce back under new coach Gabriel Heinze after missing the 2020 playoffs for the first time in franchise history.

In addition to its league plan, the team will appear in the CONCACF Champions League for the third time in a row. United will face Costa Rican club Alajuelense in the opening round on April 7th and 14th.

“Santiago is a holding midfielder who understands and reads the game exceptionally well for someone his age,” said Carlos Bocanegra, Atlanta technical director, in a statement.

“He joined the first team at River last year and, in addition to his time with the Argentine U-20 players, has seen numerous big games in both the Copa Libertadores and the Copa Diego Maradona.” AP
