Berlin, August 12 (AP) The new Bundesliga season begins with Bayern Munich as the favorite to win another title.

Bayern will start bidding for the record-breaking tenth German championship in a row at Borussia Mönchengladbach on Friday. Here’s a look at Bayern and the teams that are expected to do the hardest of the season.

The defending champion has a new coach, as the 34-year-old Julian Nagelsmann succeeds Hansi Flick, who has shortened his tenure as national coach.

After his breakthrough in Hoffenheim, Nagelsmann was coach of the year and further expanded his reputation at Leipzig, which led him to third and second place in the Bundesliga.

Nagelsmanns Leipziger reached the Champions League semi-finals in its first season and the DFB Cup final in its next.

Bavaria’s biggest new signing of the offseason also came from Leipzig. Bayern used Dayot Upamecano’s € 42.5 million ($ 50 million) takeover clause to bring the French defender to Munich.

FC Bayern also signed English defender Omar Richards on a free transfer from the second division Reading, otherwise there was little activity despite the departures of David Alaba, Douglas Costa, Javi Martínez and Jérôme Boateng.

Nagelsmann will expect the best from players like Leroy Sané or Marc Roca who have not yet lived up to expectations.

LEIPZIG

Leipzig appear to be in good shape with American coach Jesse Marsch coming from sister club Red Bull Salzburg to replace Nagelsmann.

The club signed Portuguese striker André Silva from league rivals Eintracht Frankfurt for a reported 23 million euros ($ 27 million) and should also benefit from Dominik Szoboszlai’s return to fitness.

The Hungarian striker, who came from Salzburg in January, scored on his injury-related debut in the DFB Cup. Dutch striker Brian Brobbey also came from Ajax Amsterdam.

Leipzig only has to adjust to the departures of Upamecano and defender Ibrahima Konaté. The latter moved to Liverpool in the off-season. There is speculation that Marcel Sabitzer is associated with a move to Bayern. The Austrian has rejected the club’s offer to extend his contract, which will expire next year.

But Dani Olmo will likely play a bigger role after playing for Spain at Euro 2020, and Leipzig has previously shown that it has enough depth in depth to make up for departures.

BORUSSIA DORTMUND

Last season showed both sides of Dortmund. The team was brilliant at times before collapsing under Lucien Favre. The Swiss coach was replaced by interim coach Edin Terzic, who got off to a bumpy start before leading Dortmund to the DFB Cup and Champions League at the expense of Frankfurt.

Terzic has now taken over the position of the former coach of Borussia Mönchengladbach, Marco Rose.

Jadon Sancho joined Manchester United and Dortmund responded by signing Dutch striker Donyell Malen from PSV Eindhoven for € 30m ($ 35m).

As a reinforcement for the club, captain Marco Reus decided not to take part in Euro 2020 in order to be better prepared for the coming season.

Gio Reyna has taken on Sancho’s number 7, suggesting the American has more chances to shine, and Dortmund still have the remarkable Erling Haaland up front. The Norwegian started his season with a hat trick in the DFB Cup.

Dortmund’s biggest newcomer is Stuttgart goalkeeper Gregor Kobel, who continues a trend of Swiss goalkeepers in the club. The 23-year-old Kobel impressed in Stuttgart and is expected to improve in the Westfalenstadion.

OTHER

Bayer Leverkusen, Borussia Mönchengladbach, Frankfurt and Wolfsburg all have new coaches, but they will concentrate more on qualifying for the European Championship than on the championship race.

Hertha Berlin also expects a better performance after the relegation battle last season, while Stuttgart could be the focus of Pellegrino Matarazzos’ second full season as a coach.

The American’s team only lost to Barcelona last season and have shown enough quality to finish better than ninth place last season. (AP)
