Spring is all about outdoor festivals and events in Tallahassee. Most of them were canceled in 2020, but many organizers are determined to hold their events safely. Here’s what we know about what’s and won’t go in 2021. (This list is updated regularly.)

Note: Some of these events are subject to local government approval of their COVID-19 plans, so this information may not be final.

Chain of Parks Art Festival: ON

The Artists in the Park festival weekend runs April 17-18 with extensive precautions to limit the spread of COVID-19. This includes masking, limiting the number of people per tent and directional paths to control the flow of traffic. Visit chainofparks.org.

Pigmania: ON

Goodwood Museum & Garden, organizer of the February 14 event, reconfigured it so people can either dine al fresco on the front lawn (Pig OUT) or take a take away meal (Pig IN). Visit goodwoodmuseum.org.

Chef Art Smith answers a question during a previous Pigmania, a fundraiser for the Goodwood Museum and Gardens.

Red Hills International Horse Trials: ON (but no spectators allowed)

This main event for riders and non-horses will take place on the weekend of March 11-14, but will not have any spectators at this year’s competition due to COVID-19. The organizers are examining possible options for live streaming of the various events. Visit www.rhht.org.

Southern Shakespeare Festival: ON

As of now, the festival at Cascades Park continues with a free production of “Twelfth Night”, with precautionary measures (mask requirement, socially distant seating) being taken to limit the spread of COVID-19. Visit Southernshakespearefestival.org.

Spring Tallahassee: postponed to May

The post says “Save the Date” on March 27th, but the organization’s website now lists the music festival as May 14th and the Grand Parade and Anniversary in the park on May 15th. Executive Director Terri Sue Aldridge Lawson says the board is making plans for every contingency level – from full speed in person to pure virtual and everything in between. It is determined to continue the Tallahassee tradition in some form. Visit springtimetallahassee.com.

Jewish Food & Culture Festival in Tallahassee: OUT

From a Facebook post: “A series of discussions by the Temple Israel leadership team, its entire Board of Trustees and its professional staff have led us to the inevitable conclusion that due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, we will have to cancel the 2021 festival.” The temple hopes the festival will return in 2022. Visit tempelisraeltlh.org.

Word of the south: ON

According to its website, the 2021 music and literature festival will take place April 10-11, “socially distant but better than ever”. Visit wordofsouthfestival.com.
