Pilots also prefer having their hands free so that they do not need to apply the brakes. A manual transmission requires that the brakes be applied at a complete stop. Gearboxes and planetary gears eliminate these issues, and let pilots fully enjoy the full throttle operation.

Planetary gears and transmissions do have some disadvantages, however. Because they utilize a set of pulleys and gears the planetary and planetary gearboxes can wear out over time. This can lead to excessive wear to the transmission and other gears. Additionally, planetary gearboxes are heavier than conventional transmissions and require more fuel to run. However with proper maintenance and care, this disadvantage can be overcome. Hobbyists are increasingly utilizing planetary gearboxes, transmissions, and other gadgets that can be used in smaller engines.
