WICHITA FALLS, Texas (KAUZ) – September is Hunger Action Month and the Wichita Falls Area Food Bank is doing its part to help the community.

WFAFB CEO Kara Nickens said they wouldn’t want it any other way; They are excited to help the community and to host a special event for the first time ever at the After Hours Artwalk in September.

“We wanted to make sure we were providing food to people in our community who were in need,” Nickens said.

The Tafel organizes two events on Thursday to kick off the Hunger Action Month. The first is a morning meal on the blackboard.

“We’ll be handing out boxes of non-perishable items,” said Nickens. “We’re going to have some frozen things too, including meat, and then we’re going to have watermelon and fresh produce. Just a lot of good things that I know families need right now because many people still have problems. “

The second is a Canstruction event in the Big Blue lobby during the After Hours Artwalk.

“We had five organizations collecting food and building a building,” said Simon Welch, WFAFB’s marketing director. “It’s pretty neat, I’ve seen a few and they have been really innovative and it’s amazing to see how much food they have collected.”

During the exhibition, members of the Tafel will be there to receive food donations or money if you want to donate. Visitors can also vote which sculpture is the best. Tafel is excited to have this event again and this will be the first time they are hosting it at the After Hours Artwalk.

“I wanted to bring this event back,” Welch said. “It’s been gone a couple of years and I thought it would be great to bring it back and show Wichita Falls what our organizations and our local businesses can do.”

The Tafel is always looking for ways to raise funds to try and get food for the table for every family.

“We have one in four children in our community who is at risk of going to bed hungry,” said Nickens. “A lot of people think it’s happening elsewhere, but it happens right here in Wichita Falls.

Food will be served from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Wichita Falls Area Food Bank. The Canstruction exhibition will be on view during the normal opening hours of the After Hours Artwalk. They hope to see everyone out there for fun.
